Licence Replacement & Renewal
If your licence is lost, stolen or expired, here’s what you need to do to renew or replace it. If you’re a senior citizen, here’s what you need to do so you can continue driving.
Renewing or replacing your lost, stolen or expired licence is easy
You can renew or replace your licence at one of our Driver Licensing branches.
What to bring in with you:
- Your current New Zealand Passport or two other forms of acceptable identification to confirm your identity.
- A medical certificate or optometrist certificate (if required).
- Any prescription glasses or contact lenses you currently wear to drive if applicable.
At the branch you will need to:
- Fill out the application form.
- Or fill out a DL2 for replacement.
- Complete an eyesight test.
- Have your photo taken if applicable.
- Pay for your new licence – find the current cost of a new licence or the current cost of a renewal.
You’ll then be issued a temporary licence and your photographic licence will be posted in the mail within 10 days.
Renewing your licence – Over 75 years of age
Once you turn 75 there’s a few changes to the process for renewing your driver licence:
- You’ll need to renew your licence at age 75, 80 and every two years from then.
- Your renewal fees will be lower – as you’re renewing your licence more often.
- You’ll need to present a medical certificate each time you apply to renew.
- You may have to sit a 30-minute On-road Safety Test if recommended by your doctor.
You can renew your licence before it expires so long as it’s less than six months before the expiry date:
- Go to any VTNZ Driver Licensing branch to renew your licence.
- One of our driver testing branches will also take you for your On-road Safety Test if required.
