What is a Certificate of Fitness?

A Certificate of Fitness (CoF) is a regular vehicle inspection to ensure heavy vehicles and light passenger vehicles are safe to drive on New Zealand’s roads.

Light Vehicles – CoF A

All passenger service vehicles including taxis, Uber, shuttles and rental vehicles.

Heavy Vehicles – CoF B

Most heavy vehicles with a gross vehicle mass weight of 3,500kg (or 3.5 tonnes) or more including trucks, trailers, buses and motor homes.

Get Prepared To Pass

Three easy steps follow to improve your chances of your vehicle passing its CoF:

  1. Before you take your commercial vehicle for its CoF inspection, get an independent assessment of the repair and maintenance work which needs to be completed on your vehicle in order for it to pass.
  2. Get your preferred repairer to complete the work.
  3. Bring your vehicle in for its CoF assessment.

VTNZ Vehicle Condition Assessments (VCA) provide a detailed assessment and report on the condition of your vehicle from an independent expert’s point of view.
